Winter is in full force here, and the bone-chilling cold has definitely taken a toll on my skin. Dry, cracked hands are absolutely zero fun! If you’re in the same boat, I’ve got just the thing for you – a little remedy that’s become one of my wintertime staples: a homemade rose sugar scrub. It’s simple to make, feels soothing on your skin, and is a luxurious little treat for dry, flaky hands.

I’ve always loved keeping some sort of scrub by our sinks and in the shower. But, after years of buying them, I realized how easy, cost-effective, and healthy it would be to make my own. With just a few simple ingredients (many of which you probably already have in your kitchen) you can whip up a batch in no time.

This scrub also makes the sweetest handmade Valentine’s gift for friends or loved ones. I like to use a combination of salt and sugar in my scrubs. The salt provides deeper exfoliation – but on its own can be a little too harsh for sensitive skin like mine. Combining it with sugar creates a gentler texture that still works wonders to exfoliate and nourish.

Rose Sugar Scrub Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Himalayan Pink Salt
  • 1/4 cup Liquid Coconut Oil
  • 4-5 drops Rose Essential Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

For the base, I’m using coconut oil because it’s incredibly soothing and locks in moisture like nothing else. If coconut oil isn’t your thing, olive oil or grapeseed oil works beautifully as a substitute. Fun fact about me: I’m actually allergic to coconut! However, my reaction only occurs if I ingest the protein, so I’m able to use coconut oil topically without any issues (which works great for me, because I don’t love the taste of coconut anyway!).

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, add the sugar and salt and mix until well combined.
  2. Pour the liquid coconut oil, vanilla extract, and rose essential oil into the bowl and mix until the texture is fluffy.
  3. Place mixture into an air-tight glass container. If you are gifting this item, you can add some dried rose hips to the top to make it look extra pretty!

Notes About The Rose Sugar Scrub:

If needed, you can add a little extra coconut oil to the mixture while stirring – just be careful not to overdo it. You’re aiming for a fluffy texture and not a heavy or overly saturated consistency. The balance is key for a light and luxurious feel. It may look like there isn’t enough coconut oil in the mixture after combining, but a little bit goes a very long way.

Another way to customize this scrub is by swapping out the sugar to fit your needs. Granulated white sugar works great for an all-purpose scrub, while brown sugar provides a gentler texture that’s perfect for more delicate areas like your face. I don’t recommend using this particular scrub on your face as the salt can be too harsh for facial skin. Save it for your hands, feet, and body.

I usually store my scrubs in a mason jar or something similar so that it keeps everything fresh and sealed until I’m ready to use it. When I’m using it by my sink, I like to put a little bit into a pretty decorative dish for easy access. I use my scrub so often that I go through it pretty quickly, so I don’t really worry about it going bad. Plus, salt is a natural preservative, so as long as you’re not introducing moisture into the jar this scrub will stay stable for a long time.

Give this homemade rose sugar scrub a try and treat your skin to some well-deserved pampering this winter – your hands will thank you!
